40% of all fruit grown is thrown away. One of the most thrown away fruits is the banana. We want to change that.
Food waste is one of the biggest climate threats of our time. If food waste were a country, it would be the country that emitted the third most carbon dioxide after the United States and China.
40% of everything grown in the world is thrown away. It's sickening, but it's also hard to take in or understand the scale. To make it more tangible, we chose to focus on a very popular fruit, banana.
In the world, approximately 125 million tons bananas are grown every year. In Sweden we eat about 100 bananas per person per year. We absolutely love bananas.
But the banana is also one of the most complex fruits and large quantities are thrown away. Both at the farmer, the wholesaler and the store, but above all at home in our kitchens. A banana that is too yellow is usually not a appreciated banana*.
So to do something about the waste problem, we joined forces with the banana giants, banana shops and banana consumers. It became a banana appeal , with the aim of reducing banana waste and educating people about food waste issues in a playful way.
*of course very subjective, but we've all been there. How do you like your banana?
